VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova (3-4, 0-1) was looking to rebound from a tough opening to the BIG EAST season and two goals from freshman Jessica Swoboda (Hanover Township, Pa.) and two assists from junior Amy Jackson (Columbia, Pa.) helped lift the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory over Radford (4-4). Freshman Lauren Wilson (Hummelstown, Pa.) also added her first career goal to seal the win.
Radford jumped on the board first in the game's opening minutes off a corner that Lynsey Daughtrey slid past senior Megan Goelz (Yardley, Pa.) to give the Highlanders and early 1-0 advantage. It would turn out to be the last shot on net for Radford until half way through the second half.
The Wildcats responded in the 21st minute when Swoboda deflected a pass in from sophomore Celise Feller (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) to knot the score at 1-1, which is where it would stand heading into halftime.
The Wildcats were stout defensively in the half, fighting off nine Radford corners.
Villanova started fast in the second half and Swoboda won a scramble in front of the net for her fourth goal of the season and second of the day to put the Wildcats in front 2-1. Jackson provided the first of her two assists on the day.
In the 58th minute, Wilson slapped a Jackson pass past the sprawling goalkeeper to put an insurance goal on the board for Villanova as they now led 3-1.
Villanova relied on their defense for the remainder of the game, as they only allowed four shots on goal all game despite defending 13 corners on the afternoon.
The Wildcats will look to build on the momentum as they travel across town to face Penn on Wednesday evening.
