Villanova Drops Close One to Cornell

Sept. 2, 2011

Box Score

SPRING CITY, Pa. - Villanova (1-1) applied offensive pressure throughout the non-conference game on Friday afternoon, but were unable to overcome a first-half goal by Cornell (1-0) as the Wildcats fell 1-0 in a game played at The Training Center in Spring City.

Villanova applied consistent pressure throughout the game, and most notably in the first half when the Wildcats had three corners, eleven shots, including six on net, but were unable to get it past Cornell goalie Carolyn Horner.

Cornell scored the lone goal of the match in the 20th minute off a corner that Genevieve Collins put in the back of the net past goalie Megan Goelz (Yardley, Pa.).

Villanova continued to apply pressure in the second half led by freshmen Maddy Harding (Warrington, Pa.) and Leah High (Green Lane, Pa.) who each tallied three shots a piece in the contest. Junior Olivia Maggitti (West Chester, Pa.) led the team with two shots on goal. It appeared Villanova had scored the equalizer midway through the second half off a corner, but the goal was called back due to a Villanova penalty.

In total, the Wildcats out shot Cornell 13-9 and even had more shots on goal at 7-5.

Goelz registered four saves in the defeat.

Villanova will be in action again this Sunday when they travel to Delaware to take on the Blue Hens.
