ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) was victorious at the No. 5 singles spot but Villanova (0-1) lost its spring opener by a score of 6-1 to Navy (4-1) at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday morning. Peyton won in straight sets in the team's first dual match of the season.
The fifth singles match was the final match of the day to conclude and Peyton defeated Blake Daniel by a count of 7-5, 6-1. The result continued a strong year for Peyton, who had gone 7-3 in tournament action during the Wildcats fall season. He also played at the third doubles spot today along with freshman Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) and the tandem was defeated by a score of 8-4.
At the start of the match the Midshipmen claimed the doubles point with a sweep of the three matches played. The No. 4 singles match wound up being the clinching point for Navy as Tyler Burnett defeated Rosengren (6-4, 6-2). All six singles matches resulted in a straight-sets decision.
Villanova returns to action next Friday (Feb. 10) with a match against Bryant which will be played in East Hartford, Conn.
