WASHINGTON, D.C. - Villanova standout Kevin Cunningham (Garden City, N.Y.) has been selected as a nominee for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award, given to the most outstanding player in collegiate lacrosse. Cunningham joins 24 other college lacrosse stars on the official list of nominees released by The Tewaaraton Foundation on Wednesday, April 25th.
The Tewaaraton Award has been presented to the national player of the year every season since 2001 and will be selected and honored May 31st, 2012 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
Cunningham, the 2012 BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, leads the team with 38 points via 18 goals and 20 assists. For his career, the senior attackman has posted 145 points, 66 goals and 79 assists. He currently ranks 4th all-time at Villanova averaging 2.64 points per game and 79 assists in his career, and is 5th on the list of all-time Villanova greats with 145 points.
Cunningham and the Wildcats will be back in action this Saturday, April 28th when they face Providence at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. Upon the conclusion of the regular season finale against the Friars, the Wildcats will face Syracuse in the second semi-final of the 2012 BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship on May 3rd at 7 p.m. in Villanova Stadium.
