Villanova Drops Conference Opener at Old Dominion on Friday

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova field hockey team (3-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell early Friday evening to the No. 18 Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (6-4, 1-0 BIG EAST), 8-0, at the L.R. Hills Sports Complex in Norfolk, Va.. The game marked the beginning of BIG EAST play.

The Wildcats trailed early and were not able to mount a comeback as the Lady Monarchs scored less than a minute into the contest when Katy Fuhrman notched an unassisted goal.

Villanova fought off four penalty corners and 11 shots in the following 20+ minutes before ODU took a 2-0 lead when Rosario Villagra scored on a rebound in front of the cage about 21 minutes into the game.

Old Dominion added its third goal, scored by Alyssa Jones and assisted by Villagra, two minutes later and tallied a fourth goal a minute before halftime when Villagra scored her second of the event.

Villanova freshman goalkeeper Jordyn Clipstone started in the cage for the Wildcats as she made eight saves on 19 total shots faced, 12 of which were on goal before she was relieved by junior keeper Kristina Roberts.

Roberts made her second appearance on the year after seeing time at Columbia on Sept. 13.

But ODU continued its offensive pressure in the second half, notching two goals in the first eight minutes. Sarah Breen scored the fifth goal while Casey Dolan made it 6-0.

Fuhrman scored her second goal of the evening to give the Lady Monarchs a 7-0 edge with a little over 10 minutes in regulation.

Danielle Grega recorded the final ODU goal as the Lady Monarchs won 8-0.

Roberts managed two saves in the final 35 minutes on seven shots.

Villanova only recorded two shots in the tough BIG EAST opener.

The Wildcats move forward as the squad hosts the Monmouth Hawks in a non-conference matchup on Sun., Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium in the Play4TheCure game to benefit cancer research and education on behalf of the partnership between the National Foundation for Cancer Research and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
