Villanova head coach Andy Talley...Opening statement: It was really a tough game. They are a big, physical football team. They really made us work for what we got. I was very happy to win this game, coming off the Richmond game it was really important for us to come back and play well on both sides of the ball. I told John before the game that he needed to take absolute control of this game for us to win it and he did that. He ran the ball and threw the ball well. He's the man. He needed to run our offense today and he did. Defensively we played really well Darius Victor is an unbelievable runner and very difficult to tackle. Holding them to 14 points was a great thing. We didn't really let their quarterback hurt us and our kicking game played well. I feel very well about how we played today across the board.
On the win: We really talked about what we had to do this week. I think we have a pretty mature football and that's critical in the CAA. Richmond got beat by Maine today. You really have to be mentally strong. Coming off this game was our second opportunity to see how we would come out after a tough loss to attempt to redeem ourselves. This was a critical game for me to see what kind of team we have, and I think we have a playoff team. I don't want to jump to conclusion but we've been behind, had things not go our way but we have the right stuff. Towson really is better than their record; they are as physical as any team we have played. This sets us up to see what we can do in the playoffs. We want to be home for thanksgiving and then come back and play with a couple players coming back from injury.
Junior quarterback John Robertson...
On playing his first game since September 6 without a cast on his non-throwing hand: It felt great. I stiff-armed someone for the first time this year and I was a little nervous when I did it but it was awesome. It's great being able to fully use both hands.
On the slow start by the offense in the game: Their defense came out firing on all cylinders. Our offensive line stepped up big time after that and everyone got comfortable. Last week was bizarre when we were playing, we weren't clicking as a team on offense. This week we knew that we had to play well, and we did. The whole team stepped up big time.
Senior running back Austin Medley...
On the Wildcats offensive line: Once our offensive line gets going it's hard to stop us. With John throwing the ball for first downs we will do well. It's hard to keep John down. We stressed paying attention to detail this week on offense and it really paid off.
Junior linebacker Don Cherry...
On the big sack by Villanova when the score was 21-14: They came out and drove down the field for a touchdown; we were going `what the heck.' We really had to come out and buckle down after that and bend but not break. They came out and we knew we had to get the stop on that third down and we were able to get a sack. Once we get rolling on offense and defense as a whole team, we're really hard to stop.
Towson head coach Rob Ambrose...
Opening statement: Congratulations to Andy Talley and Villanova. John Robertson is the leading rusher against us again; maybe one day before he graduates we'll learn how to tackle him. Rushing is what has made him effective every game of his entire career. He's one of the most elusive football players at this level in the country. He's very hard to tackle and runs their system extremely well. Considering we were running the ball all the time because we weren't dynamic in the pass game at all, I'm really proud of our rushing game and the guys along the offensive line. You can't win football games in this league when you're letting defenses score points on your offense. I'm really proud of our kids, I really am, but we've got a lot of growing up to do both physically and technically.
