Solo Homers Harm the Wildcats as Friars Take Game One

April 17, 2014

Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A pair of solo shots off Kate Poppe proved to be the difference maker as the Villanova softball team (14-24, 2-8 BIG EAST) dropped game one on the road to Providence 1-0 Thursday afternoon at Raymond Field.

The Wildcats fall to 2-8 in the conference and 14-24 overall, while the Friars bump their record to 3-10 in the BIG EAST and 5-22 on the season.

Although Poppe tossed her 15th complete game, the ace collects the loss and moves to 8-18 on the bump. She finished with seven strikeouts and surrendered two runs on four hits in six innings.

Freshman Taylor Huntly picks up her fourth win in the circle. She allowed eight hits and no runs during her 12th complete game.

Despite outhitting the Friars eight to four and producing at least one hit in each inning, the Wildcats were unable to come through with a timely hit and push a run across the plate.

Knotted at 0-0 in the fourth, cleanup hitter Kristie Dederick took a fastball over the fence to give Providence the first run of the game.

With two outs in the fifth, Chase Snell and Lauren Herschberg ripped back-to-back singles to give the Wildcats a runner in scoring position for the second time. Huntly buckled down and got reigning BIG EAST Honor Roll member Sierra McConnell to strikeout and end the threat.

Right fielder McKall Miller registered her team-high sixth homerun with two outs in the sixth to extend Providence's advantage to 2-0.

Chase Snell registered three hits and now leads the squad with 31 on the season. Lauren Herschberg went 2-3 in the three slot. The freshmen lead the team with multi-hit games as Snell has nine for her career and Herschberg has eight.

Ali Angelbello and Natalia Segovia each added a hit for their 12th and 20th hit of the season, respectively.

Both teams will return to the field to conclude today's doubleheader.
