VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's swimming team (5-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) defeated the Richmond Spiders in a nonconference meet on Friday afternoon from the Villanova Swim Complex by the final of 147-110.
The Wildcat women captured nine first-place victories, seven second-place marks and six third-place finishes including sweeps of the 200 and 1000 freestyle events.
FREESTYLE
The women dominated the freestyle events, finishing first and second in all five.
Junior Kaisla Kollanus took first in the 50 and 100 free with times of 24.17 and 52.29.
Freshman Caitlin Daday touched the wall first in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events, pacing at 4:58.14 and 10:14.25 in the respective wins. Sophomore Emily Mayo followed closely behind for second in the 1000 free at 10:16.33 while fellow sophomore Erin Merkle came in at 10:40.61 to complete the sweep.
Mayo also took second place in the 500 free, touching the wall at 5:02.02.
The Wildcats swept the 200 freestyle with senior Katrin Heider leading the way with a final time of 1:53.13. Senior Sara Jurek finished second at 1:53.26 and sophomore Jessica Randolph came in third with a time of 1:54.29.
Jurek also took second place in the 100 free at 52.65 and Randolph grabbed second in the 50 free with a time of 24.52.
BACKSTROKE
Freshman Gabby Daigneault continues to be a consistent finisher for the Wildcats in the backstroke events as she took first place in the 100 and 200 events with respective times of 57.36 and 2:03.99.
Fellow freshman Mary Spillane finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.71.
BUTTERFLY
Junior Fiona Hardie won the 100 butterfly with a final time of 57.05 and took third place in the 200 event at 2:06.50.
Sophomore Kristin Haufler finished second in the 100 with a time of 58.18 and freshman Mackenzie Niness also grabbed second place in the 200 at 2:06.02.
BREASTSTROKE
Freshman Olivia Cacciatore finished third in the 200 breast event with a final time of 2:29.64.
RELAYS
Villanova grabbed one of its nine victories in the 200 medley relay. Gabby Daigneault, Heather Farley, Fiona Hardie and Katrin Heider finished with a winning time of 1:47.37.
The quartet of Colleen Lord, Kristin Haufler, Kaisla Kollanus and Jessica Randolph followed closely behind with a third-place finish in the same event at 1:49.63.
NEXT UP
The women's and men's teams both host Pittsburgh on Sat., Feb. 7 at the Villanova Swim Complex. Diving competition starts at 10 a.m. followed by the swimming portion, which begins at noon.
