Last weekend the Wildcats went 1-1, defeating fellow BIG EAST team Providence on Friday afternoon by a final of 3-1. The Friars scored their only goal of the game the first minutes into the game.
It only took moments until Villanova freshman Allison Sayia tied the game up; the assist on the goal went to Kristen Mericle. Just ten minutes into the game, sophomore Francesca Bello scored a goal of her own off a pass by senior Kayla Kenney to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. This would be the score going into halftime. The start of the second half was delayed an hour and forty minutes due to weather.
The second started off with the Friars dominating ball control, but the Villanova defense stayed strong and did not allow a goal. Halfway through the half the Wildcats start to take control of the ball and took a couple corners. Off of one of the final corners, Kenney was able to score the final goal for the Wildcats. Mericle was able to pass the ball over the Kenney from across the arch.
Sunday afternoon the Wildcats hosted Rider for their annual Play 4 the Cure game. Villanova tried to rally back with a couple second half goals but fell short by a final of 4-3.
The Broncs had a 3-1 lead at half time, all three of their goals were scored by Carlie Spaeder. Villanova's lone first half goal was scored off a penalty corner stopped in play by Mericle and passed inside to Bello who found the back of the net.
Kenney scored early in the second half for the Wildcats on a penalty stroke that was successful during the 47th minute to bring the team within one, but the Broncs scored a goal ten minutes later to regain a two goal lead.
Villanova junior Courtney Devine scored her second goal of the season with minutes to go in the game, to bring the game within one. This lit a spark in the Wildcats who tried their best in the closing minutes to try to tie up the game but there wasn't enough time left on the board.
