Oct. 17, 2015 Recap | Box Score | Notes
Villanova head coach Andy Talleyââ'¬Â¦
On the team getting back on track after two straight losses: This was the turnaround game for us this year. We knew that Albany was up against the wall as well; they had a lot of injuries, so did we. I thought we played really well, made some big plays and hung in there. The game was close in the first half; in the second half we blew it open.
On the Villanova running game: The big thing was we had the same offensive line three weeks in a row. We haven't had that. It's what is up front that counts. The backs ran hard and Zach [Bednarczyk] had a great day. We protected him a little bit more and he was 12-for-12, so it was one of those days.
On Zach Bednarczyk's performance: I think he had more command of the game today than he has in the last couple of encounters. That's the big thing for a quarterback. He had a running game behind him, and when you give a quarterback a good running game their confidence level is high. They know they don't have to make ever play. [Zach] came in with a bad shoulder, so we didn't really want to run him that much. He threw the ball great. He was money today.
On the defense making five takeaways: Cameron McCurry was tremendous with the two interceptions. Our defense bent a lot today but didn't break, and they had some critical turnovers when we needed them. When [Albany] was down inside the red zone [near the end of the first half], that was critical. That would have made it 10-7 and would have given them some confidence. It's the first time our defense has really come alive in the turnover department, and offensively we really complemented it well.
On [junior defensive lineman] Tanoh Kpassagnon: He's a great player for us and it was awesome to see him play as well as he did.
Junior running back Javon Whiteââ'¬Â¦
On the offensive line: The offensive line did a great job. We were working all week and focusing on getting a push so we could improve our running game. We came down here, we stayed focused and we were hungry. We knew it was a must-win and we got it done.
On his individual performance in the game: I just have to continue to grow from here. The sky is the limit. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season and just making sure our team gets better from here.
On whether there is added pressure on the running backs with a young quarterback: Not at all. I just have to do what I can do, and be the best I can be. My teammates will do the same. As long as we are clicking and all of us are doing our job, we will be fine.
On getting extra yards after contact: At the start of the week the running backs coach, [Ola] Adams, said that this week we had to bring our own blocker and not to go down after the first hit. That was a big focus on our part and we were able to get it done today.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Bednarczykââ'¬Â¦
On completing all 12 of his pass attempts: John [Robertson] said to me around the third quarter he thinks that he has the record for highest completion percentage [94.4%, 17-18]. I was hoping I didn't throw an incompletion because I wanted to get this [record]. Someone came up to me and asked if I knew I was throwing a perfect game. I was like 'do you play baseball? You don't tell the pitcher he has a perfect game.'
On what allowed him to be 12-for-12: The game plan was to get the ball out quickly. That way the line didn't have to hold the defenders for too long. We were going to just take what the defense gave us. The game plan helped me go 12-for-12. It was just a lot of quick passes.
On the running game: I can't even tell you how much easier that makes it. If it's 3rd-and-3 you can hand it off and most likely you'll get the three yards. It just makes your job so much easier, and then when you are running the ball the defense has to take that into consideration, which opens up the passing lanes. It makes my job so much easier.
On the offensive line: They just came out and they played so physical. I guess they were just tired of hearing about injuries and new guys stepping in, that they just wanted to come out and show what they can do. Things like that are awesome to see. When the running back looks like he's stuffed and then you've got guys pushing him into the end zine, I love to see that.
On coming up with a game plan: [Offensive coordinator Sam] Venuto says that sometimes he is still figuring out what kind of quarterback I am. He knew what John was because he coached him for four years. This game plan was mostly just to get the ball out quickly, and it was to benefit me as well. We talked about it and we are still figuring it out.
Senior safety Cameron McCurryââ'¬Â¦
On the team getting back on track: We have just been trying to overcome the adversity we have been through the last couple of weeks and stay as positive as we could be. We knew this was a big game for us after the last two weeks. We really wanted to get a win from this one.
On what was talked about in the locker room at halftime: We had a great game plan. [Defensive coordinator Billy] Crocker came in at halftime and adjusted one or two things. We started picking up on a few things they were doing we thought. Overall everyone just bought into what the game plan was and we took advantage of it.
On his two interceptions: It was just man-to-man and I kind of saw they were shrunk down in their formation a little bit. It was something we practiced a lot throughout the week. I was able to get to his hip and undercut it.
On his forced fumble: The last three or four weeks we were really focusing on getting the ball away and giving our offense extra possessions. We have been going through takeaway circuits every day in practice. I just saw the ball and was able to come up with it.
