Villanova/Albany Post-Game Notes

Oct. 18, 2015

Recap | Box Score | Quotes

  • Villanova snapped a two-game losing streak with the win over Albany and did so by having a breakout game on both sides of the ball. The 37 points scored by the Wildcats were eight more than Villanova had scored in its two previous games combined. Since the start of the 2011 campaign, the Wildcats are 24-3 (.889) when scoring at least 30 points in a game. The shutout for the Villanova defense was the first since a 45-0 win at Rhode Island on November 9, 2013. The Wildcats had allowed a combined 62 points in their previous two games.
  • Villanova set season highs for total offense (421) and rushing offense (269) with the win. Meanwhile, the defense limited the Great Danes to 232 total yards. It is the second time this season that the Wildcats have held an opponent below 250 yards (Fordham, 182) and the fifth time in six games that Villanova limited the opposition to 311 yards or fewer.
  • The Wildcats had a season-high 35:04 time of possession after only having the ball for 25 minutes or less in each of their last three games. The time of possession was the highest for Villanova since it held the ball for 36:59 last year at Penn (September 27, 2014).
  • Redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Bednarczyk completed all 12 of his pass attempts and finished the game 12-of-12 for 152 yards and two touchdowns. He had the most attempts without an incompletion in a single game in school history. The Wildcats record for consecutive completions is 21 by Kirk Schulz, who completed 21 straight attempts against Central Connecticut State on October 10, 1987. He eventually finished that game 28-of-38 (73.7%). The previous single-game record for highest completion percentage was 94.4% (17-of-18) set by John Robertson at Towson on October 12, 2013.
  • Junior running back Javon White tallied the second 100-yard rushing game of his career with 16 carries for 124 yards. His other 100-yard game was a 143-yard performance earlier this season at Fordham (September 12, 2015).
  • Senior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas became the 21st player in school history to reach 1,300 career receiving yards. Gulyas has 69 career catches for 1,310 yards. He needs 57 more yards to tie Phil Atkinson (2005-08) for 20th place in school history.
  • Villanova forced five turnovers against Albany after only forcing four turnovers in its first five games combined. The five turnovers included four interceptions and one fumble recovery. The game was the first in which the Wildcats gained five turnovers since also forcing five at Towson on October 12, 2013. The last time Villanova made four interceptions was against Lehigh on September 13, 2008.
  • Senior safety Cameron McCurry had two interceptions and a forced fumble in the game. It is the second time in his career that he has had at least one of each, as he had one pick and also forced a fumble in a 35-6 win over Stony Brook on September 21, 2013. This was the first time that McCurry had two interceptions in a contest. The last player to achieve the feat for the Wildcats was Jason Ceneus, who had two interceptions last year against Morgan State (October 25, 2014).
  • Freshman kicker Gerard Smith made a 39-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first quarter. He is now 2-for-2 on field goal tries in his career after also making a 26-yard attempt against William & Mary.
