ITHACA, N.Y. - The Villanova women's swimming team won the 2015 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday evening from Ithaca, N.Y. with a total of 957.5 points. The conference championship marks the second in a row for the Wildcat women after winning with 842 points last year.
Villanova head coach Rick Simpson was named the BIG EAST Women's Coach of the Year, marking his second-straight year garnering the conference honors.
Junior Kaisla Kollanus was named the Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer.
The women dominated the 18 swimming events over the course of four days, winning 14 races including all five relays. The Wildcats broke two individual and two relay program records while also tying another. Freshman Gabby Daigneault also set a new program record in the 100 backstroke (55.27) in the lead offof the 400 medley relay for a total of five Villanova records broken and one tied.
Junior Kaisla Kollanus broke the program record in the 100 freestyle with a time on 49.67 on Saturday. She owned the previous mark of 49.82, which she set in 2013. Kollanus also tied the 50 freestyle program mark last night.
Senior Sara Jurek finished third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.96. Sophomore Jessica Randolph came in fourth at 51.23.
The women also broke the 400 freestyle relay program record behind a time of 3:22.35 turned in by Randolph, senior Katrin Heider, Jurek and Kollanus. The previous mark, 3:22.46, was set in 2013 by Jurek, Elphick, Heider and Kollanus.
In the 1650 freestyle, the Wildcat women went 1-2-3, sweeping the mile-long event behind sophomore Emily Mayo, freshman Caitlin Daday and sophomore Erin Merkle. Mayo touched the wall with a final time of 16:24.78 for first place. Daday and Merkle finished with times of 16:47.68 and 16:58.91, respectively, for second and third in the event.
Junior Fiona Hardie won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.30, making her perfect in the fly events after winning the 100 last night. Freshman Mackenzie Niness finished second in the 200 with a time of 2:02.03 while fellow freshman Christine Sullivan finished fourth at 2:03.46.
In the 200 breaststroke, freshman Olivia Cacciatore turned in a time of 2:20.38 for a second place mark in the event.
In the 200 backstroke, Niness finished in fifth at 2:03.14 for the top Villanova time in the event.
Georgetown came in second with 736.5 points followed by Xavier (555) in third, Seton Hall (472), Providence (207) and Butler (187).
