Women's Swimming Falls to Pitt, 182.5-111.5

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's swimming team fell to the Pittsburgh Panthers, 182.5-111.5, in the home finale for the squad this season. The team will now prepared for the conference championships in two weeks.

The Wildcats gathered five first-place victories, seven second-place marks and six third-place marks against the Panthers.

Four graduating seniors were recognized before the start of the event: Claire Aksamit, Sara Jurek, Kate Koch and Katrin Heider.

Jurek grabbed a win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.38 and also finished second in the 100 free at 52.39. She notched fourth place in the 50 free (24.20).

Heider took fifth place in both the 100 (52.77) and 200 (1:52.94) freestyle events.

Koch took fifth in the 100 fly at 58.59 and seventh with a time of 2:13.23 in the 200 IM.

Aksamit finished eighth in the 100 back and swam a leg in the 400 free relay.

Junior Kaisla Kollanus continues to perform well for the women as she won the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 24.00 and 52.23, respectively.

Freshman Gabby Daigneault gathered a first place-finish in the 200 backstroke at 2:03.09 and two second-place marks in the 100 back (57.43) and 200 IM (2:07.55).

Junior Fiona Hardie took first in the 200 fly, touching the wall at 2:05.38. The junior also finished second in the 100 fly at 57.07.

Freshman Caitlin Daday and sophomore Emily Mayo each placed in the 500 and 1000 free events. Mayo finished second in the 500 free (4:59.42) and third in the 1000 free (10:21.97) while Daday finished second in the 1000 (10:11.15) and third in the 500 (5:05.56).

Sophomore Megan Conrad and freshman Mackenzie Niness both earned third-place finishes in the 200 back (2:08.81) and 200 fly (2:08.05), respectively.

The women's relay team of Hardie, Heider, Jessica Randolph and Jurek finished second in the 400 freestyle relay, coming in at 3:35.35 while Mayo, Christine Sullivan, Mary Spillane and Megan Conrad finished the event at 3:38.60.

In the 200 medley relay, Daigneault, Heather Farley, Hardie and Kollanus placed third with a time of 1:46.85.

The women are next in action at the BIG EAST Championship in Ithaca, N.Y., hosted at Ithaca College from Wed., Feb. 18 to Sat., Feb. 21. Tickets are on sale and the event will be live-streamed on FOX Sports GO on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
