Water Polo Competes in Hartwick Invitational

VILLANOVA, Pa. - In the single day tournament, the Hartwick Invitational, the Wildcats played in three separate matchups. The team played Hartwick first, followed by Brown and then finished up the evening with Connecticut College. Nova took the second two games of the day.

Game 1: Hartwick 18, Villanova 10

In the first game of the day the Wildcats took on the Hartwick Hawks. Villanova jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter but then Hartwick was able to tie up the game and eventually gain a 10-5 lead at the half. The Wildcats then limited the Hawks to only three goals to their five in the third quarter bringing the score to 13-10 Hartwick, but they were then shut out in the fourth quarter while the Hawks scored five additional goals in the last period.

The Wildcats had three goal scorers with two goals a piece including Lizzie Louwers, Callan Edwards and Naomi Ng. Additional goals were scored by Sarina Shibata, Mary Riley and Sara Lynn Abele.

Julie Conrath was the Wildcats goalie in the game and she saved seven total goals from being scored.

Game 2: Villanova 11, Brown 10

In the second game of the day Villanova and Brown extended the game into overtime with the score tied at 10 when senior Callan Edwards scored the game winning goal to give the Wildcats the victory over the Bears.

Julie Conrath more than doubled her amount of goals from the first game of the day when she saved 15 shots on goal by the Bears, and held them off long enough in overtime to help the Wildcats win.

Villanova's leading scorer by far was Sheila Gerrity who tallied six goals on the day including two goals in the first, second and fourth quarters. Lizzie Louwers, Dominique Clark, Callan Edwards Sara Lynn Abele and Naomi Ng all had a goal each.

Game 3: Villanova 16, Connecticut College 9

In the third and final game of the Hartwick Invitational the Wildcats were again able to win, this time against the Connecticut College Camels. The game was close at half time with the `Cats leading by one goal (6-5). In the second half, Villanova outscored Connecticut College 10-4 to secure the victory.

Sheila Gerrity again was the star of the game for the `Cats. She put four balls into the back of the net to earn her spot as the Wildcats leading scorer. On the day as a whole she tallied 10 goals in the Wildcats three games.

Julie Conrath totaled 11 saves in the game. Other Wildcats who contributed to the goal scoring were Callan Edwards and Naomi Ng with three each, Sadie Dutcher compiled two, and Sarina Shibata, Dominique Clark and Katie Latimer each added one more each.

The Wildcats will now start the bulk of their conference play one week from today when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y. to take on St. Francis (N.Y) and Siena on March 21 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
