Fairfield Hosts Villanova Saturday for Final Non-Conference Matchup

VILLANOVA, Pa. - 20th-ranked Villanova (5-2) travels outside the state of Pennsylvania for the first time in 2015 this Saturday when they take on the Fairfield Stags (4-4) on March 21st at Rafferty Stadium. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and SNY.

Series History: Saturday marks the 7th meeting between the two schools with the all-time series favoring Villanova by a 4-2 margin. The two sides met for the first time in 1993 and reignited their rivalry in 2010. Villanova won the most recent outing on March 5th, 2011 by a 10-6 margin in Connecticut.

Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Saturday's contest with a 5-2 record with wins over Penn State (W, 11-7), Drexel (W, 14-11), Delaware (W, 10-4), Penn (W, 17-11) and Lehigh (W, 8-3). The Wildcats opened the year with a loss to Johns Hopkins (L, 13-10) and fell to Maryland last weekend (L, 11-2). As of the latest USILA Coaches and Cascade/Maverik Media Polls released on Monday, March 16th, Villanova has scheduled four ranked opponents on their calendar this season: No. 5 Denver, No. 6 Maryland, No. 11 Marquette and No. 19 Johns Hopkins.

`Nova Offense: Jack Curran (Fair Haven, N.J.) leads the team with 21 points via 14 goals and seven assists while Sean Cerrone (Huntington, N.Y.) follows closely behind with 19 points (5g, 14a) on the year. Freshman face-off specialist Luke Palmadesso (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) has posted a 44% win percentage from the faceoff X this season taking 51-of-115 attempts. The Wildcats average 10.29 goals per game on offence and surrender 8.57 goals per game defensively.

'Nova Defense: Junior Greg Stamatov (Foxboro, Mass.) and sophomore Dan Willis (Moorestown, N.J.) have each played 210 minutes in net for the Wildcats and have combined for a .562 save percentage and 77 saves on the season. Villanova as a team has combined for 150 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers.

A Look at Farifield: Fairfield brings a 4-1 record into Saturday's showdown with the Wildcats. The Stags have posted wins over Providence (W, 10-6), Manhattan (W, 15-4), Colgate (W, 13-9) and UMass-Lowell (W, 11-5). Losses on the year have come via Holy Cross (L, 10-9), Stony Brook (L, 10-9), Yale (L, 9-8 OT), and Bucknell (L, 10-9).

Stags Offense: Fairfield averages 10.50 goals per game on offense and surrenders 7.83 goals per game defensively. Tristan Sperry (13g, 13a) leads the team with 26 points while Colin McLinden (7g, 16a) is second on the team with 23 points. 15 different players have posted points for Fairfield through eight games.

Stags Defense: Brad Nordstrom has been the starter in net this season and has an 8.53 GAA and a .544 save percentage. The team has collectively grabbed 234 ground balls this season (29.25/game) and has won 100-of-172 faceoff's (.581) on the season.

The Last Meeting (3/5/11): Anchored by Jack Rice's hat trick and points from nine different players, the Villanova men's lacrosse team brought home a significant 10-6 victory over Fairfield on Saturday afternoon. Billy Hurley tallied 13 saves in the win.
