VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats (4-1) return home tomorrow for the first of two games this week when they take on the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (2-3) on Tuesday, March 10th. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
Tuesday's game will be Dollar Dog Night at the concession stand with plenty of Dollar Dogs available for purchase. Additionally, the contest will be streamed live on Nova Nation All-Access with Nick Mantegna on the call.
Series History: Tuesday marks the 27th meeting between the two schools with the all-time series favoring Villanova by a 15-11 margin. The two sides have met for eight straight seasons prior to Tuesday's matchup and four of the last five meetings have finished by a two goal margin or less. Lehigh won the most recent outing 7-6 in triple overtime on February 16th, 2014.
Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Tuesday's contest with a 4-1 record after recording four straight wins over Penn State (W, 11-7), Drexel (W, 14-11), Delaware (W, 10-4)and Penn (W, 17-11). The Wildcats opened the year with a 13-10 loss to Johns Hopkins. As of the latest USILA Coaches and Cascade/Maverik Media Polls released on Monday, March 9th, Villanova has scheduled four ranked opponents on their calendar this season: No. 3 Denver, No. 8 Maryland, No. 12Marquette and No. 17 Johns Hopkins.
`Nova Offense: Jack Curran (Fair Haven, N.J.)leads the team with 19 points via 12 goals and seven assists while Danny Seibel (Wakefield, Mass.) follows closely behind with 15 goals on the year. Freshman face-off specialist Luke Palmadesso (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) has posted a 48% win percentage from the faceoff X this season taking 42-of-87 attempts. The Wildcats average 12.40 goals per game on offence and surrender 9.20 goals per game defensively.
'Nova Defense: Junior Greg Stamatov (Foxboro, Mass.) and sophomore Dan Willis (Moorestown, N.J.) have each played 150 minutes in net for the Wildcats and have combined for a .521 save percentage and 50 saves on the season. The Villanova defense has combined for 55 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers.
A Look at Lehigh: Lehigh brings a 2-3 record into Saturday's showdown with the Wildcats and the Mountain Hawks are coming off a 9-9 overtime loss win vs. Bucknell. Lehigh has posted wins against Furman (W, 14-11) and Boston University (W, 10-9) while losses on the year have come via Marquette (L, 10-9), Loyola (L, 11-8) and Bucknell (L, 9-8 OT).
Mountain Hawk Offense: Lehigh averages 9.80 goals per game on offense and surrenders 9.87 goals per game defensively. Dan Taylor (14g, 14a) leads the team with 28 points while Reid Weber (10g, 3a) is second on the team with 13 points. 12 different players have posted points for Lehigh through five games.
Mountain Hawk Defense: Matt Poillon has been the starter in net this season and has a 9.87 GAA and a .561 save percentage. The team has collectively grabbed 147 ground balls this season (29.4/game) and has won 48-of-113 faceoff's (.425) on the season.
The Last Meeting (2/16/14): The Wildcats fought back from a three-goal deficit and 20 minute scoring drought to send the game into overtime, but Villanova couldn't pull away for the win as Lehigh defeated the Wildcats, 7-6, in triple-overtime in Bethlehem, Pa. It marked the first triple-overtime contest Villanova has played in nearly eight years: Villanova last fought a three-OT battle on April 4th, 2006 against Saint Joseph's that also ended in a 7-6 loss.
