Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, the Villanova Wildcats (21-23, 8-7 BIG EAST) took on the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (31-6, 11-1 Patriot) and were defeated by a score of 7-1. The scheduled doubleheader had to be lessened to just a single game due to a rain delay. It was the first ever game played at Lehigh's brand new Leadership Park.

On the mound for the Wildcats was Kate Poppe. She pitched the first three innings for the Wildcats before Brette Lawrence replaced her in the bottom of the fourth inning. Poppe re-entered the game in the same inning and finished out the game from there. She totaled six innings, three earned runs off five hits and she struck out nine batters.

The Mountain Hawks sent out Emily Bausher to the mound. She pitched the first five scoreless innings while only allowed two hits before being replaced by Christine Campbell who pitched the final two innings of the game and she gave up the one Villanova run.

The only Villanova run of the day came in the top of the sixth inning. Brittany Husk led off the inning with a double down the left field line for her second hit of the day. A couple batters later, Chase Snell came through with a two-out RBI double to right field, scoring Husk from third base. The other Wildcats to get a hit in the game was Lauren Herschberg.

The first run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning when Lehigh's Morgan Decker drove in Nicole Yozzo on an RBI double out to left field, giving the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

Decker would drive in the second Lehigh run as well. With nobody on base in the bottom of the third inning she drove a ball out to deep right field for the first home run ever at Leadership Park.

The Mountain Hawks tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alexis Watanabe hit an RBI single and Morgan Decker added her third RBI on the day by hitting a sacrifice fly out to left field to make the score 4-0.

Another three runs were added in the fifth and sixth innings for the Mountain Hawks. Carissa Zito and Alexis Watanabe scored on a wild pitches and Zito added a sacrifice fly of her own in the sixth innings to make the score 7-1.

The Wildcats will next play in a doubleheader tomorrow at Lafayette. The first game is set for 2:30 p.m. with the second game beginning 20 minutes after the completion of the first.
