VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova (6-6, 1-3) will be on the road this Saturday for the final game of the 2015 regular season when they take on the Providence Friars (4-9, 0-4) at 1 p.m. at Lennon Family Field. The Wildcats are looking for their fourth-straight berth into the BIG EAST Tournament and are `win and in' with a victory over the Friars this weekend. Seeding for the tournament has yet to be determined heading into the final weekend of conference action.
Series History: Saturday marks the seventh overall meeting between the two schools with the all-time series favoring Villanova by a 4-2 margin. Villanova has won three of the last five outings with Providence winning last season's matchup 11-10 in double overtime.
Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Saturday's contest with a 6-6 overall record and 1-3 conference record. The Wildcats have posted wins over Penn State, Drexel, Delaware, Penn, Lehigh and St. John's and have fallen to Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Fairfield, Marquette, Denver and Georgetown. As of the latest USILA Coaches Poll released on Monday, April 13th, Villanova has five ranked opponents on their calendar this season: No. 3 Maryland, No. 5 Denver, no. 13 Georgetown and No. 16 Marquette.
`Nova Offense: Sean Cerrone leads the team with 33 points via 19 goals and 13 assists while Sean Cerrone follows closely behind with 32 points. Freshman face-off specialist Luke Palmadesso has posted a 55% win percentage from the faceoff X this season taking 129-of-236 attempts. The Wildcats average 9.75 goals per game on offense and surrender 10.25 goals per game defensively.
'Nova Defense: Sophomore Dan Willis has played 376 minutes in net and tallies a 10.05 goals against average and saves at a 54% clip while junior Greg Stamatov has seen 330 minutes in the crease and posts a 10.73 goals against average and a 46% save percentage. Villanova as a team has combined for 276 ground balls (23.00/game) and 60 caused turnovers.
A Look at Providence: Providence brings a 3-9 overall record and 0-4 conference mark into Saturday's showdown. The Friars have posted wins over Vermont, Boston University, Sacred Heart and UMass Lowell and have fallen to Fairfield, Duke, Hofstra, Bryant, St. John's, Georgetown, Marquette, Brown and Denver on the season.
Friar Offense: St. John's averages 8.23 goals per game on offense and surrenders 11.31 goals per game defensively.Will Mazzone (24g, 10a) leads the team with 34 points while 17 players have posted points for the Friars this season through 13 games.
Friar Defense: Peter Badgley has played 740 minutes in net this season and posts a 11.50 GAA and a .543 save percentage. The team has collectively grabbed 355 ground balls this season (27.30/game) and has won 112-of-297 faceoff's (.337) on the season.
The Last Meeting (4/26/14): Villanova came back to tie the game with 38 seconds left in regulation but luck wasn't on their side as Providence netted the game-winner in double-overtime to claim a 11-10 victory over Villanova on Saturday afternoon. In a contest where the Wildcats never led, Villanova played in their fifth overtime contest this season which marks the most-ever in Villanova lacrosse history.
