PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - The Villanova baseball (20-25, 6-8 BIG EAST) dropped game one of Saturday's doubleheader to Seton Hall (22-21, 7-7 BIG EAST) by the final of 3-2. The loss evened the series up at one apiece after the Wildcats won the Friday matchup. Villanova honored seniors Josh Harris, B.J. Bochicchio, Jeff Courter and senior team manager Stuart Younger before the start of the game.
Freshman Mike Sgaramella pitched 6.0 innings in relief for the Wildcats after he came in with two outs in the first inning. Freshman start Ryan Doty exited the Saturday afternoon affair early on after giving up a pair of doubles.
In his appearance, Sgaramella faced 27 batters, allowing just five hits and one earned run.
Seton Hall started the scoring on back-to-back doubles in the first inning. Doty exited the game when the score was 1-0 with a runner of second. But Sgaramella got the final out of the inning by rolling a grounder to Eric Lowe as short.
The Pirates added another in the third on an RBI groundout. A leadoff double followed by a groundout put Seton Hall's Zack Weigel on third. An ensuing groundout to Todd Czinege at second base gave Seton Hall the early 2-0 lead.
Villanova got one back in the fifth. Kevin Jewitt started the inning with a single through the left side, one of three hits for the junior on the day to lead the Wildcats. Jewitt then went first to third on a single by Zander Retamar.
With runners on the corners, the Wildcats put on a safety squeeze with David Gulati at the plate. Gulati laid down the bunt, between the pitcher's mound and first base, on the first pitch he saw. Seton Hall's Anthony Elia, a left-handed pitcher, tried to make the play but could not get a handle on the ball as Jewitt broke for home on the pitch. Though Villanova got one, the Wildcats were not able to score another in the inning.
Seton Hall took a two-run lead in the sixth on a dropped fly ball in the outfield.
In the eighth, Villanova received its best scoring opportunity in the game. The rally started with back-to-back, two-out singles by Adam Goss and Eric Lowe. With runners on first and second, Czinege powered a double down the left field line. Goss scored easily on the play as the ball rolled into the corner. Lowe hustled home but was thrown out on the relay throw on a close play at the plate.
Jeff Courter pitched the final 2.1 innings, including a 1-2-3 ninth inning, but the Wildcats could not mount the comeback in game one of the doubleheader as the squad fell, 3-2, to even the series.
