Villanova head coach Andy Talleyââ'¬Â¦
Opening statement: It was a typical Villanova-Delaware game. It was an amazing game. I thought Delaware played tremendous. They played a lot better than we did. The defense played tremendous and held us in the game. They did a terrific job in some critical spots in the game to get the ball back to us. I can't say enough for Zack [Bednarczyk] to come in cold like that at quarterback and do what he did. That is probably as good of a quarterbacking job as we have had with the second guy going in and figuring out how to help you win the game both with his arm and with his feet. The mental attitude of our program is always 'we're in it to win it.' We keep tapping the rock and hopefully good things will happen.
On John Robertson's injury: John is going to have on MRI on Monday. We are pretty sure it is not the ACL, at least on first recognition by the doctor. We will know more after we get the MRI results.
On the Wildcats upcoming game against Penn: It is extremely difficult. A Herculean task for us given the injuries that we have right now. We have to get Zack comfortable with the game plan immediately. We are going to have some young guys playing and we have a short week to get ready for this game. We have just been through three wars with Connecticut, Fordham and Delaware.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Zack Bednarczykââ'¬Â¦
On coming into the game while Villanova was rallying from a fourth quarter deficit: I wasn't really that nervous because everyone was saying 'we got you.' I get reps with these guys every day in practice so it's not like I'm going in there with strangers. I know what we've got and I know what we can do.
On the fourth quarter rally: Kevin made a huge catch and Aaron Wells took a hard hit and held onto it. That makes it that much easier for me. I thought he was going to be wide open and not have to take a hit but that was a big hit and it was a huge catch that [Wells] made there for us.
On his 21-yard touchdown run for the decisive score: On the run, my first two reads weren't there and I saw a hole open up to my left, so I just ran through it and I saw I could cut back and there was no one there.
On beating Delaware, and having to rally late to do it: I know how big of a rivalry it is so it feels awesome. I could tell by how happy everyone was that it was a huge deal that I was able to get us down the field.
On potentially starting if John Robertson misses time: I feel comfortable playing. Even when I'm not getting physical reps at practice, I am watching John and taking mental reps, so I think I will be ready to play if I have to.
Senior wide receiver Kevin Gulyasââ'¬Â¦
On Zack Bednarczyk: We saw what he was capable of in the spring. When John went down, there was no doubt in our mind that Zack would be able to step in and lead to the victory.
Senior linebacker Don Cherryââ'¬Â¦
On playing Delaware: You know it is always going to come down to the wire. Delaware is a really good young team and they were extremely physical.
On Zack Bednarczyk: We saw John go down and we were a little nervous. Zack is a really good young quarterback so it was nice to see him go in with a lot of confidence and for the whole team to rally around him. Zack going in there and making a huge play gave us a lot of confidence.
Delaware head coach Dave Brockââ'¬Â¦
Opening statement: Obviously it is an excruciating loss. It was very challenging. I feel for the men in that locker room. They played their hearts out and gave everything they had. They worked really, really hard. It was a tough, hard-fought, physical game. I'm very, very proud of those players in the locker room. We have to find a way to finish with the lead in the fourth quarter. The game went how we hoped it would go. In the second half, I think they had seven total offensive plays in the third quarter. We were able to control the ball and the clock by keeping them off the field. We were not able to finish. It's a team loss. We'll have to find a way to win as a team. Ultimately that falls on me, not the players. Those players gave everything they had. I couldn't be more proud of those kids in that room.
