It was a great day for the Villanova Field Hockey program. The Villanova Field Hockey team finished the season on a good note as they picked up their final win of the season on Senior Day. The Wildcats beat Georgetown 3-2 in their last conference game of the season.
The Wildcats finished the season 5-13 overall and 2-5 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown fell to 5-11 overall and 0-7 in the BIG EAST.
To begin the day, the four Villanova Field Hockey seniors were honored before the game. Carolynn Clark, Courtney Devine, Taylor Kidwell, and Kristen Mericle have been tremendous senior captains for the Wildcats all year.
As the celebration ended, the Wildcats and Hoyas geared up for their last conference games of the season. Villanova came on top first when Kristen Mericle set up Molly Turner for a perfect pass, who then dribbled in to give the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage within four minutes of play.
The Wildcats and the Hoyas fought hard throughout the first game, as the Hoyas outdrew the Wildcats in penalty corners 10-4 in the first half. With ten minutes remaining in the first half the Wildcats received their third corner. Kristen Mericle fired a shot on goal, as fellow senior tipped the ball into the goal past the goalie to make the score 2-0. The Wildcats were not done yet as they finished the first half with their fourth penalty corner as the freshman duo of Emma McLaughlin and Abby Siana finalized the end of the half. Siana assisted McLaughlin with ten seconds remaining as the Wildcats closed out the first half of the game with a 3-0 advantage.
With the second half underway, the Hoyas notched two goals off corners within 20 minutes. In the 52nd minute the Hoyas scored and then in the 57th minute, they scored again.
As the clock winded down to the final minutes of play, both teams were firing shots on goal, but the Wildcats ended Senior Day with a win.
Georgetown outshot Villanova 24-14, and received more penalty corners, but Villanova came out on top. The Wildcats finished with 14 shots, 10 of which were on goal, and 9 penalty corners. Erika Miller finished the game with 9 saves, after allowing two goals. Despite the victory, four spots have already been clinched for the BIG EAST Tournament that is set to begin next week. Both Villanova and Georgetown did not qualify for the postseason championship.
Senior day and the huge victory over Georgetown were not the only two exciting things that happened for the Villanova Field Hockey Program. The win today marked Head Coach Joanie Milhous' 200th win at Villanova. It was a great day to be a Wildcat today!
