Villanova Wins One, Drops Four in Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. - In the Princeton Invitational the Villanova women's water polo team earned their third win of the season, a 10-6 win over Cal Lutheran, but dropped its other four matches to finish the weekend with a 1-4 record.

The Wildcats (3-5) earned the win over Cal Lutheran on Friday but fell 16-5 to Princeton and 12-5 to Cal Baptist on Saturday. Villanova finished the weekend with a narrow 11-9 loss to Harvard and a 9-5 loss to Bucknell.

CAL LUTHERAN

In Friday's win, Villanova jumped out front with a 3-0 start but Cal Lutheran got on the board just before the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats added a goal to go ahead 4-1 but the Regals scored the next two goals to cut the lead to one. Villanova answered the push with a goal before halftime to lead 5-3 at halftime.

Cal Lutheran used a strong third quarter and a goal at the beginning of the fourth to tie the score at 6-6. Sarina Shibata scored two goal while Naomi Ng and Dominique Clark added a goal apiece in the final quarter to rally late and get the win.

PRINCETON

Princeton scored the first eight goals of the game and Villanova did not score until 6:13 left in the third quarter. The Tigers tacked on three goals at the end of the third to lead 12-3 after three quarters. The Wildcats scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter while Princeton scored four times to reach the final score of 16-5.

CAL BAPTIST

Villanova was outscored 4-1 by Cap Baptist in each of the first two quarters to trail 8-2 at halftime. The Wildcats were outscored 4-3 in a low scoring second half for a 12-5 final tally.

HARVARD

Earlier in the season, Harvard beat Villanova by a score of 14-4 in the Harvard Invitational. The Wildcats were tied with the Crimson after the first, 2-2, at halftime, 5-5, and after three quarters, 8-8.

Harvard scored the first three goals in the fourth quarter to take an 11-8 lead. Villanova scored the final goal of the game to make the final 11-9.

BUCKNELL

Villanova and Bucknell traded goals in the first quarter with the Bison scoring first and last to take a 3-2 lead. The Wildcats held Bucknell scoreless in the second and knotted the score 3-3 at the break.

The third quarter was the turning point as Bucknell broke open the game with four goals while holding Villanova to just one. The Bison added two more in the fourth to extend the lead to five before Villanova scored a meaningless tally at the end.

The women's water polo team will take part in the Mercyhurst Invitational this weekend in Erie, Pa. The Wildcats will play Cal State Monterey Bay, Gannon, Washington & Jefferson and host Mercyhurst over the two day tournament.
