May 16, 2016 VILLANOVA, Pa. - Five student-athletes are set to enroll at Villanova this fall as members of the Men's Soccer team, it was announced today. The group joins four previously announced signees in what is viewed as a Top 20 recruiting crop by topdrawersoccer.com.
The five newcomers include: defender/midfielder Sean Teixiera; goalkeeper Carson Hunt; midfielder and defender David Bettenhausen; midfielder/forward Jack Gilliam and midfielder/forward Jacob Anderson. They will be part of a class that also includes defender Nikkye DePoint; midfielder Frank Cotroneo; midfielder/forward Conor Bradley and his brother, defender Shane Bradley. Those four-student athletes were announced as incoming freshmen last month.
"Our staff is extremely excited about the diverse skill set this class brings to Villanova Soccer," stated head coach Tom Carlin.
Teixiera is ranked as the No. 56 prospect in his class and a four star recruit by Top Drawer Soccer. He was a member of the United States' National team Pool from U14-U17 and has trained with the New York Red Bulls reserve team NYRB II.
"Sean is a very skillful player who has played at the highest of levels with the USA youth national teams and the New York Red Bulls academy," said Carlin. "He does a wonderful job of playing a simple game and has a blue collar work rate that we love. He has been training and playing in games with the NYRB II this year, which is fantastic for his maturity as a player."
Hunt played club soccer for Baltimore Celtic, the 2014 US youth soccer national champions. In, addition, he was a standout and all-state selection at Loyola (Md.) Blakefield High School.
"Carson is a mature goalkeeper who has won at all levels," Carlin notes. "His ability to command a backline and understand the defensive shape of a team is at a very high level. We were also impressed with his ability to make the big save." Bettenhausen was a 4-year varsity starter and 2-year captain at Malvern Preparatory School. He played club soccer for Continental FC Premier and Lower Merion Magic. With Continental FC, he led the team in goals and assists in both seasons. In 2014, the team won the Region 1 Champions League. He made the switch to Lower Merion Magic in 2015. Since joining Lower Merion Magic, has won 4 major tournament championships.
"David has a lot of Villanova in his family," said Carlin. "He understands what it will take to succeed here both on and off of the field. He has a great attitude and work rate and will bring nice versatility to the team with his ability to play a variety of positions."
Gilliam is a native of Naples, Fla., who played club soccer for the Florida Fire Juniors. He is a recipient of the 2015 Naples High Student-Athlete Award - given to Juniors/Seniors with three varsity letters and the Highest Team GPA. Additionally, he played on the Disney Showcase Champion with Florida Fire Juniors club team in 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2014.
"Jack is a very attack-minded player," noted Carlin. "He is very confident on the ball with a high level soccer IQ and vision when picking out his passes. He has the ability to play anywhere in the midfield or up top."
Anderson resides hails from Altadena, Cal., where he has been a starting forward for FC Golden State, a U18 US Development Academy team. He finished with 10 goals in the 2014-15 season. In addition, he was voted "Best 11" at the USYS National Championship, U16 division, Germantown, Md., July 2014.
Explained Carlin: "Jacob has great technical quality to go along with his 6-4 frame. He can play in a few different spots and has the ability to finish or create in the final third. He continues a pipeline that we've been forming on the west coast and we are excited to bring another talented Californian into our Villanova family."
