Wildcats Nominated for Four ESPYS

June 22, 2016

BRISTOL, Conn. - The 2016 ESPY award nominations were announced this week and the 2016 NCAA National Champion Villanova Wildcats were nominated in four different categories.

The Wildcats join six other 2015-16 champions in the category of Best Team. That group includes the University of Alabama football team; University of Connecticut women's basketball team; Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos; NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers; World Series champion Kansas City Royals and Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

The final play in the NCAA championship game which saw Kris Jenkins drop in a game-winning 3-point field goal against North Carolina is one of 16 nominees for Best Play. The Jenkins' shot is listed as a No. 2 seed in the bracket - only an Aaron Rodgers' Hail Mary pass for the Packers is seeded higher.

That NCAA title game against North Carolina is one of three nominees in the category of Best Game. The other options are the Packers vs. Arizona Cardinals NFC Divisional playoff game and Game Seven of the NBA Finals between the Cavs and Golden State Warriors.

Wildcats' Head Coach Jay Wright is one of five nominees in the Best Coach/Manager category. Other nominees include UConn's Geno Auriemma; Alabama's Nick Saban; Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost; and Cleveland Cavs' head coach Tyronn Lue.

The ESPYS will be presented on ABC on Wednesday, July 13.
