EASTON, Pa.-- On Sunday, Villanova Field Hockey traveled to Lafayette in a midday match-up. It was pancreatic cancer awareness day as Villanova posted a shutout against the Leopards, 1-0.

With the game underway, the Leopards were the first to strike as they earned a quick penalty corner in the opening minutes of play. While they received the first corner, Erika Miller was there to save the ball from hitting the net. She recorded two saves in the half. The rest of the Wildcats got to work on both sides of the ball as the defense controlled the attack throughout the half allowing only two shots. As the half was winding down, Emma McLaughlin found teammate Lydia Sydnor for shot that saw goal in the 28th minute. The Wildcats went into halftime with a 1-0 edge.

In the second half of play, Lafayette saw an early chance for the equalizer but the Wildcats defense was quick to block the shot that came off a corner. For the next couple of possessions, Villanova was able to get good looks at the goal but nothing could get past the goalkeeper as she had two back-to-back saves. For the remainder of the half, Villanova's defense remained poised as they faced an urgent Leopards offense. In the end, the defense was able to fend off Lafayette to blank them, 1-0. Miller posted her first shutout of the 2017 season as she ended the day with four saves.

"Lafayette is a very good team and I'm very happy with how our ladies played today. We competed and passed the ball very well," Villanova field hockey head coach Janie Milhous said.

Villanova will have another Friday-Sunday game week as they will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Friday for a City-6 contest against Temple. Then, on Sunday the Wildcats will host non-conference foe Monmouth (NJ) for Alumni Day.
