Angel Piccirillo Runs 3000 Meters at NYRR Millrose Games

Feb. 11, 2017

NEW YORK - During the famous NYRR Millrose Games on Saturday afternoon, Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) competed in the Women's 3000 Meters and tallied a time of 9:10.65 while placing seventh in an elite field of runners. Piccirillo, who has used up her collegiate indoor eligibility and will not compete for Villanova until the start of the outdoor season, represented the United States in Saturday's race at the New York Armory.

A field of nine runners started the race, and there was a separation of just four seconds between the top eight in the pack with 1000 meters to go. Piccirillo was in eighth place at that point, and just two seconds off the pace being set by eventual winner Kate Van Buskirk of Canada. Van Buskirk took the lead from Stephanie Garcia of New Balance during a quick final lap, while the third through seventh finishing spots remained unchanged for the final 500 meters.

This is not the first time that Piccirillo and Van Buskirk, a Duke graduate, have been linked. At last year's indoor BIG EAST Championships, Piccirillo set a collegiate record in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:40.82. Van Buskirk had owned the previous record of 2:41.00, which she set in January of 2011.

Also competing during Saturday's action at the Millrose Games was former Wildcats sprinter Shanice Grant, who ran in the 60 meter hurdles for her native Jamaica. Grant finished sixth in the hurdles with a time of 8.17.
