The Villanova women's rowing team were able to get back out on the water at the Schuylkill River for a warm Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa. Five boats competed in today's 35th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta.
The Novice Eight boat were the first to race at 9:24 a.m. The Wildcats finished fourth with a time of 8:38.79, behind Northeastern, Colgate, and Fordham. There were nine boats over two heats that competed in this event.
Following their race, were two back to back races for the Wildcats in the Women's Junior Varsity Eight Boats. In Heat 1, the Villanova B boat finished with a 7:40.57 time to help them finish third. Fordham's A boat took first place and Temple finished second with Loyola and St. Mary's A boat competing as well in this Heat. In the second Heat, the Villanova A boat finished last with a 7:34.93 time behind Navy's A boat, Drexel and Boston College's B boats, and Connecticut. Both boats competed against 28 other boats throughout six heats.
Two more boats would compete on the day with the Women's Novice Four up next. They finished fourth in their heat with a time of 8:31.72. There were 16 other boats that the Wildcats raced against.
Lastly, the Women's Varsity Eight DI boats would compete against 24 other boats. This boat helped Villanova win their first race of the season two weeks ago at the Rollins Regatta in Florida. Today they finished third with a 6:52.55 time behind Temple and Drexel. Pittsburg came in last with a seven-minute time.
The Villanova women's varsity eight team (cox-Maggie Cavanaugh, stroke-Emily Lenane, Eryn McCassey, Hailey Hurteau, Eileen Gaffney, Briggs Mroz, Morgan Mroz, Kiera McCloy and bow-Valerie Burke) will travel across the country to San Diego, Calif. for the San Diego Crew Classic next week April 1 and 2.
