Farmville, Va.-- Wildcat Field Hockey (0-1) fell to Longwood (1-0) in a close battle on Friday night with a score of 2-1 in overtime.
Villanova's offense came out strong in the first half with an early pair of shots by Preseason All-BIG EAST Team member Francesca Bello. It was an offensive battle for the first half of play with both teams tallying three shots at the half. Despite a strong defensive front, the Wildcat offense couldn't execute as the game remained tied at zero headed into halftime.
As the second half commenced, the Lancers struck first in the first four minutes of play giving Longwood a 1-0 advantage over Villanova. 18 minutes through the half, co-captain Allison Sayia recorded her first goal of the season off an assist from Emma McLaughlin. With Sayia's seventh career goal, the Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 with just 17 minutes remaining in regulation. With the game notched at one a piece after 70 minutes of play, the Wildcats headed into overtime.
In overtime, goalkeeper Erika Miller came up big with two saves early, but couldn't fight off the Lancer offense as the Wildcats dropped the game 2-1. The Villanova Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 27, when they take on VCU in Richmond Va. at 1 p.m.
