CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.- Under the lights Friday night, Villanova Field Hockey (2-7) faced off against their first BIG EAST opponent, Providence (6-3), at home. In game the Wildcats were edged by the Friars, 4-1.
In the first half, the Friars kicked things off as they saw early shots, but Junior, goalkeeper Erika Miller was there with a pair of saves. The Wildcats also saw some early offense with shots from Lydia Sydnor and Francesca Bello. As they saw shots on goal, they couldn't see them hit the net. For most of the first half, the Wildcat defense remained vigilant and came up big as Christen Pennington earned her first defensive save of the season. In the 19th minute, the Friars put pressure on the defense as they netted their first goal of the game. As the half went on, Villanova held their composure ending the first 35 minutes edged, 1-0. The Wildcats ended the half with eight shots and five saves from Miller.
With the second half underway, the Wildcats looked for their first goal of the game. The defense got to work as they saw Providence take three early shots that ended in one goal. With the score 2-0, Villanova turned up the offense as they earned their fourth corner of the game. Villanova got a good look but the goalkeeper was there was to keep her shutout alive. As the Friars earned two more goals, Villanova saw a penalty corner at the end of regulation. On the penalty corner, Suzie Clark netted her first goal of the season of an assist from Riley Dolan. Villanova dropped the match, 4-1.
Up next for the Wildcat Field Hockey team is a trip to Quinnipiac on Friday Sept. 29. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
