Queens, N.Y.- Despite scoring the first two goals of the game the Villanova Wildcats fell to the St. John's Red Storm in overtime by a final of 3-2.
Villanova got on the board in the 17
th minute to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Freshman
Shaye Seyffart found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal on passes from
Reagan Smith and
Daniela Nelson. The Wildcat would keep the lead heading into halftime. Villanova outshot the Red Storm 9-2 in the first 45 minutes.
The Wildcats scored their second goal in the 58
th minute when
Chloe O'Neill placed a shot from the center of the box on free kick pass from
Kristin Barbour into the back of the goal. St. John's answered back just three minutes later when Christina Bellero netted their first goal on a dish from Mecara Bruce.
The Red Storm tied the game up in the 88
th minute when Bellero this time set up Lucy Whipp for the game tying goal to force overtime. Freshman keeper
Hensley Hancuff had seven saves on the night before she and St. John's Samantha Masur received red cards at the end of regulation.
Rebecca Gartner came into goal for the Wildcats at the start of overtime. Seyffart took a shot just over three minutes into OT but it went high. The Red Storm would score the game winner in the 99
th minute when Samie Scaffidi cross from the right side to Bellero who scored.
The Wildcats will continue road play this Sunday when they take on DePaul in Illinois. Game time is set for 2:00 P.M. ET and can be seen on BEDN.
