March 18, 2018 VILLANOVA, Pa.- Villanova competed at St. John's and Lafayette this weekend. Opening BIG EAST play at St. John's on Friday, the Wildcats fell, 6-1 and bounced back on Sunday to capture the win over Lafayette, 6-1.
At St. John's, Carina Burdick was the lone Wildcat to pick up a win as she competed in the No. 5 spot (3-6, 6-3, and 10-8). Claudia Althans also took her opponent to three sets in the No. 2 spot but couldn't come up with the win as she fell, 2-6,6-3, and 7-5.
During doubles competition Lindsey Evans and Victoria Martinez had a strong showing in the No. 1 spot but couldn't come up with the win as they fell short, 6-4. In the No. 2 spot Lexi DeNucci and Kaylan Rotman also had a hard-fought battle but couldn't get the win as they dropped the match 6-3. Rounding out doubles competition in the No. 3 spot, Althans and Paulina Bajet came up short to St. Johns Collins/Marjanovic, 6-4.
On Sunday, the Wildcats traveled to Lafayette. In doubles, Alexandra Krogius and Ellie Zimmerman captured the first win in No. 3 spot, 6-1. Burdick and Zoe Speaker competed in the No. 2 spot where they helped the Wildcats clinch the doubles point with a victory over Lesnick/Snyder, 6-1. Bajet and Lindsay Evans completed the sweep for Villanova as they won, 6-2.
In singles on Sunday afternoon, Althans competed in the No. 2 spot where she picked up the win 6-1 and 6-0. Competing in the No. 3 was Rotman who defeated Lafayette's Grace Conrad, 7-5 and 6-1. Victoria Martinez won her match in No. 4 spot in two sets, 6-2 and 6-3. In the No. 5 spot for Villanova was Burdick who helped the Wildcats capture the singles point at the match by defeating Black of Lafayette 6-2 and 6-1.
The Wildcats will travel to Butler on Friday, Mar. 23 with the match beginning at 4 p.m. They will then continue BIG EAST play as they travel to Xavier on Mar. 24.
