Villanova defeats Chapman 10-8 to conclude California trip

ORANGE, Calif.- The Villanova women's water polo (2-9 overall, 0-0 MAAC) team concluded its California trip today with a win against Chapman 10-8. Senior Dominique Clark led the team in goals with three. The team returns to play and begins conference play on the east coast when the face St. Francis Brooklyn at Siena College on Mar. 10 at 10:30 a.m.

Villanova struck first in the quarter after a power play goal was scored by freshman Kate Murray to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with 4:35 left in the quarter. Then a minute later while Chapman was on the powerplay, they scored a goal to tie the game up a 1-1. Strong defense by both teams would close the quarter with both teams remaining tied at 1-1.

In the second quarter only one goal would be scored the entire quarter and it was by Chapman with 6:49 remaining the in the quarter. Chapman would hold the lead at the end of the quarter with a 2-1 lead.

Then in the third quarter the scoring kicked in for both teams. The first goal of the quarter was scored by Dominique Clark to tie the game up at 2-2 with 7:32 left in the quarter. Shortly after, Clark again would score a goal off an assist by Katie French while on even strength to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. Chapman would come back to tie the game with a goal to make the score 3-3 with 5:45 left in the third. Villanova would respond though with a goal by freshman Charlotte Curran off an assist by Camille Oswald to take back the lead 4-3. A back a forth goal by both sides would close the quarter with the score 5-4 in favor of Villanova. The final goal by Villanova in the quarter was scored by Sara Lynn Abele with 1:27 left in the quarter.

The fourth quarter would begin with a goal by the Panthers to tie the game up 5-5 with 5:59 left in the game. Charlotte Curran would answer for Villanova by scoring a goal to take back the lead 6-5 with 5:52 left in the game. Just forty seconds later, Sara Lynn Abele would add to the Villanova lead with a goal with 5:15 left in the game to increase the Wildcats lead to 7-5. After a Chapman goal made the score 7-6, Dominique Clark would score her third goal of the game to make the score 8-6 with 4:21 left in the game. Back and forth goals by both teams, led to the final score to be 10-8 Villanova. The two goals scored in the final minutes by Villanova were courtesy of Kate Murray and Camille Oswald.

The team returns to play and begins conference play on the east coast when the face St. Francis Brooklyn at Siena College on Mar. 10 at 10:30 a.m.
