Second Half Goal Propels Lafayette Over Villanova, 1-0, in Season Opener

Easton, Pa.- Villanova had several offensive opportunities and saw production from 20 players on the afternoon, but Lafayette came away with the 1-0 win over the Wildcats on Friday in Easton, Pa.  The contest was the season opener for both teams and it marks the opening weekend for NCAA Division I women's soccer across the country.

In the opening half the Wildcats took four shots, all taken by freshman with two placing theirs on goal.  Reagan Smith placed the first on goal in the 20th minute while Tory Belcuore gave Villanova a chance with just five to go before half time.  The Wildcats were awarded three corner kicks in the half, with Allison Breed getting a shot off after the first corner that went wide. 

Goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff came out of goal and helped to force Alexa Buffa's shot to go wide with just a minutes to go before halftime to keep the game scoreless.

Bri Austin led the Villanova offense in the second half.  The sophomore got a cross pass fed to her off a corner kick and placed her shot right on goal, but it was saved by Maggie Pohl. 

Lafayette sophomore Krista Kissel scored in the 51st minute the lone goal in the contest.  Kissel was set up on a cross pass from Alex Sanford and placed her shot into the right side of the net.   

Austin has two more chances in the following minutes.  The first came on another cross pass into the box, this time her shot went high and in the 64th minutes, a shot placed right on goal was saved by Pohl.  Daniela Nelson had the final Villanova scoring chance in the 87th minute when she crossed a shot in the box, but Pohl picked up her fifth save of the game and made the final 1-0 Lafayette.

Next, the Wildcats will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for a Sunday afternoon contest against LSU.  Kickoff against the Tigers is set for 2:00 P.M. ET.
