Wildcats Opened Fall Season at Bison Invite

Claudia Althans won the singles top flight

LEWISBERG, Pa. – The Villanova women's team competed at the Bison Invite this past weekend on the campus of Bucknell University.

Head coach Steve Reiniger on the weekend, "Overall the players represented Villanova very well. Given that it was our first tournament of the season, we competed hard and supported one another. Starting at the top with captains Ellie Zimmerman and Lindsey Evans, our leadership is strong, and the rest of the team follows suit."

In singles play, sophomore Claudia Althans won the top flight defeating Samara Eisenberg of Binghamton 7-5, 6-2. For the second flight, freshman Olivia Kapp survived a third set tie-breaker to clinch her draw over fellow teammate Carina Burdick.

Reiniger on doubles, "Four out of five pairings were new so they're still working things out. It was Villanova vs. Villanova in the top-flight semifinals with the tandem of Althans and Evans moving on after coming back from a 1-5 deficit edging out Burdick and Kapp in a tiebreaker."

Villanova's doubles team of Evans and Athans fell to Bucknell's doubles team of Koch and Evans 6-3 in the doubles championship.

The Wildcats will travel to Philadelphia this weekend for the St. Joseph's Tournament. The tournament starts on Friday and ends on Sunday.
