CHICAGO – The Villanova women's volleyball team swept the DePaul Blue Demons 3-0 on Friday night. This was the Wildcats' first BIG EAST road game of the season.
With the win Villanova improves to 10-6 and 3-2 in conference play.
Head coach Josh Steinbach on the victory, "it was good team win. It's great to get wins on the road and even better to sweep. Our middles and Chicago kids were especially good."
One big milestone that was achieved during the match was senior middle blocker Amanda Pedersen-Henry eclipsing over 1,000 career kills.
Steinbach on Pedersen-Henry, "Amanda has been a special player for us and it's been a pleasure watching all thousand of her kills."
Junior setter Emma Decker had 34 assists and junior libero Regan Lough had 15 digs.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Clare Delaplane had 11 kills. It was her fifth game in a row with double digit kills.
The first set was back and forth. Villanova led 10-9 and then the Blue Demons went on a 3-0 run to lead 12-10. The Wildcats responded with a 4-0 run to retake the lead. The set would continue to stay close but with Villanova leading 18-17, the Wildcats went on another 4-0 run to lead 22-17. The teams would trade the next few points and Villanova would win the set 25-20. Delaplane had nine kills in the opening set.
Wildcats jumped out to an 11-6 lead to start the second set. The Blue Demons cut the Wildcats' lead to 15-12. Villanova was at set point with the score 24-15 but DePaul went on a 5-0 run. It wouldn't be enough, as the Wildcats would end the run and win the set 25-20.
Just like the second set, Villanova got an early lead to start the third. The Wildcats led 14-8 and then the Blue Demons cut it to 22-19. Villanova would win the final three points to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Villanova will travel up to Marquette to play the Golden Eagles tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. ET. The match will be live streamed online.
