Cincinnati, Ohio- The Villanova women's soccer team (8-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) use a strong second half to defeat the Xavier Musketeers (7-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) by a of 2-1.
The Musketeers got on the board first in the 18
thminute when Samantha Dewey picked off a ball in the box and tapped to it Sabrina Kunimoto. Kinimoto was able to get her close shot to fall into the back of the net.
Kristin Barbour gave the Wildcats their best scoring opportunities in the first half. She placed a shot over 20 yards out on goal that was saved and another shot in the 35
thminute that she took while in traffic had the power but Tori Bizzarro came out of goal and was able to stop the shot a couple yards out.
Villanova's defense came out strong in the second half working together to deny Xavier a goal in the 52
ndminute. First the Wildcat blocked a shot and seconds later were able to get a team save to end the threat.
Claire Fell tied the game up in the 62
ndminute when she was able to place a header into the back of the net of a deflection. The play started when
Jasmine Ruiz placed a Villanova corner kick to Barbour at the top of the box. Barbour kicked the ball into the middle of the box where it found
Kristen Vinciguerra. The ball popped off her foot and into the air and went off the shoulder of a Xavier player before finding Fell for the equalizer.
It was just five minutes later when Villanova would take a 2-1 lead. The Musketeers were clearing the ball when Barbour pick it off and place it in front of Ruiz. She was able to place a shot from 20 yards out into the upper corner of the goal and out of the reach of Bizzarro.
The Wildcats took 10 shots on the day and placed half on goal as well as had six corner kicks.
Next the Wildcats will host Seton Hall on Thursday at 4:00 P.M. at Higgins Soccer Complex and then will head to Washington, D.C. to take on the Georgetown Hoyas next Sunday at 1:00 P.M.
