Softball Heads to Disney to Open Season

Villanova, Pa. – Villanova Softball is set to play five games in the next three days against Iowa, Missouri, LIU Brooklyn, Stetson, and Bethune-Cookman.

A Look at Villanova: Villanova is the only team they will be competing against to not play a game yet. They will look to receive production from returning players, while also needing chip ins from first year Wildcats. Villanova returns 16 letter winners while welcoming 7 newcomers. This is head coach Bridget Orchard's first season under the helm. They look to begin the season on the right foot as they take on Iowa, Friday at 11:00 A.M.

A Look at Iowa: Iowa opened up play last weekend in the 2019 Tiger Classic. They finished the tournament with a 1-3 record. They opened the season against Bucknell and beat them 5-3. They then fell twice to #10 LSU and also fell to Tulsa along the way. Similar to Villanova, Iowa also has a first-year head coach. Renee Gillispie came over from UCF where she compiled a record of 625-403-1. The game will be broadcasted on FloSoftball.

A Look at Missouri: Missouri opened their season last weekend at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. They finished the tournament with a record of 3-2, while getting wins over Utah, #12 Arizona State, and Kansas. They fell to #25 Oregon and Oregon State in the process. The game will be broadcasted live on FloSoftball and there will also be live stats on stat broadcast.

A Look at LIU Brooklyn: LIU Brooklyn kicked off their season in the FGCU Kickoff Classic and completed it with a record of 2-3. They started off the season with a loss to Ball State before splitting games with Kent State and Florida Gulf Coast. They will take on Bethune-Cookman and UMass before playing Villanova in their third game of the tournament. The Blackbirds were picked to finish second in the NEC in 2019, behind Sacred Heart.

A Look at Stetson: Stetson began their season with a three-game series against Indiana State this past weekend. They dropped the first two games 6-4 and 10-2 respectively, before the third game was rained out. Their game against Villanova on Saturday will be their second of the day as they will play Providence at 11:00 A.M.

A Look at Bethune-Cookman: Bethune-Cookman started their season with the Florida Atlantic Kickoff Classic in Boca Raton, Fl. In their first game of the tournament, they fell to Indiana 2-1, before beating Virginia 5-4 (9 inn.) later in the day. They then dropped three straight to #6 Georgia, St. John's, and host Florida Atlantic. Pitcher Alexis Bermudez was named MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. They were predicted to finish second in the northern division.
