Wildcats Can’t Overcome Late Virginia Rally

Series will conclude on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Villanova baseball team fell to the Virginia Cavaliers in the second game of Friday's double header 7-3. The Cavaliers scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to retake the lead. With the loss the Wildcats dropped to 0-4 and the Cavaliers improved to 3-3.

Sophomore Jimmy Kingsbury got the start for the Wildcats. Kingsbury pitched seven innings giving up five hits and he struck out six batters.

In the bottom of the second the Cavaliers scored their first run off a ground out to third base to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats tied it back up in the top of third with a two out double by Tyler Bruno scoring John Heilenbach from second base.

Virginia retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a double to left field scoring the base runner on second to make it 2-1 Cavaliers.

The Wildcats took the lead for the first time in the top of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Nick Lorusso hit a two-out two-run double to give Villanova a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Virginia's leadoff hitter hit a home run to right field to tie the game at 3-3. With one out and runners on first and second the Cavaliers hit a single through the right side scoring the runner on second to make it 4-3. With runners on the corner, UVA hit a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 5-3. Virginia would score two more runs to make it 7-3.

The Wildcats will conclude the series against Virginia on Sunday with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
