VILLANOVA, Pa. – The women's lacrosse team will prepare for its second home game out of a three-game stretch, on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. The Wildcats will host the Siena Saints following the men's lacrosse game at 12 p.m. against Hofstra.
The Wildcats
Head coach Julie young and the Wildcats are currently 1-1 on the season after a 19-9 loss at Duke (2/9) and a 13-12 home victory over Cornell (2/16). Villanova's win over the Big Red marked its first victory in program history improving their all-time series to 1-3.
Leading the Wildcats in points so far this season is junior attack
Katie Comerford with 11 and senior attack
Ashley Lynch with seven. Comerford has scored four goals and leads the team with seven assists. Lynch follows behind in second with four assists and has also scored three goals. Senior midfielder
Devin Hassinger has a team high six goals and 12 draw controls. Hassinger is currently ranked fourth in all-time career draw controls with 117, Shawna Gust (2010-13) currently holds the No. 1 spot with 158. Fellow midfielder, junior
Grainger Rosati is second on the team with seven draw controls so far this season.
In the net for the Wildcats is freshman keeper,
Alexa Moro. Moro has recorded 13 saves in two games on 52 shots faced and was a big proponent in Villanova's 13-12 defeat over Cornell.
Last Matchup
The last time the Saints and Wildcats faced one another was in 2002 while Villanova was still a member of the Patriot League. Villanova was coached by Shannon O'Neil at the time and finished the season 9-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
It was the second game of the season for the Wildcats the year they defeated the Saints 19-4. The 2002 season was a tough year for Siena. They competed in 14 games that season and struggled to capture a win over any of their opponents.
Scouting the Saints
For the 2019 season, the Saints are 0-2 after being defeated by Columbia 13-12 in their first game of the season and Army 8-12 on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Six Saints have contributed to the offense so far this season. Nicole McNeely leads the team with six goals and one assist for seven points. Annie Brennan sits second in points with three goals and three assists. Kaitlyn Dowsett follows behind with five points but is second on the team with five goals. Kerry Gerety also has five points this season on three goals and two assists and she leads the team with eight draw controls. Mary Soures and Therese Pitman have also helped Siena's offense.
Goalkeeper Sammy Horton is Siena's go-to in the net. In her first game of the season she recorded 10 saves on 28 shots faced and in the second game against Army she saved six shots on 18 shots faced.
Siena is coached by Abigal Rehfuss who is currently in her second season at the helm of the program.
Looking Ahead
Villanova will compete in their last home game of the month on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. when Navy heads north to the Villanova Stadium.
