Baseball Hits Three Home Runs in 13-9 Loss to Chicago State

Villanova had 10 hits and eight walks in high-scoring rematch between the teams

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—For the second time in three days, Villanova (1-8) and Chicago State (3-6) went back and forth in a prolific offensive contest on Sunday afternoon.  Less than 48 hours after the Cougars had walked off with a 12-11 win against the Wildcats on Friday evening, the second meeting between the teams in the Snowbird Baseball Classic resulted in Chicago State posting a 13-9 victory at North County Regional Park.  There were a combined 22 runs on 27 hits in the rematch.

Junior third baseman John Heilenbach (Western Springs, Ill.) hit a three-run home run in the first inning to power Villanova to an early 4-0 lead, while senior catcher Doug deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) and freshman shortstop Dylan McNary (Jefferson, Mass.) each homered in the bottom of the ninth when the Wildcats threatened to spoil a Cougars lead which had swelled to a seven-run advantage.  McNary's home run was the first of his collegiate career.

Villanova had leads of 4-0 after one inning and 6-3 after five innings, but Chicago State sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight runs in the sixth inning to go in front for the first time with an 11-6 margin.  Two more runs in the top of the ninth made the score 13-6 and were necessary insurance when the Wildcats staged a late rally in their final turn at the plate.

After deMarrais hit a solo home run with one out, sophomore center fielder Chris Rotondo (Redding, Conn.) walked with two away and McNary followed with a two-run homer to left.  Freshman designated hitter Nick Lorusso (Monroe, Conn.) walked and senior pinch hitter JP Radvany (Lawrenceville, N.J.) singled before Cougars reliever Calvin Peacock recorded the final out.

McNary, deMarrais and sophomore second baseman Pat O'Neill (Eagleville, Pa.) had two hits apiece to pace the Villanova offense.  Lorusso singled, walked twice, scored a run and drove in two in addition to making his first collegiate start on the mound and pitching five innings.  He departed with a 6-3 lead after allowing three earned runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out five.

Three consecutive singles to left field by Rotondo, McNary and Lorusso to open the bottom of the first inning spotted the Wildcats an immediate 1-0 lead.  Following a strikeout and a fielder's choice for the first two outs of the inning, Heilenbach belted the first pitch he saw for a three-run shot to center.

Villanova scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning without needing to get a hit.  Heilenbach and sophomore right fielder Jeff Manto (Bristol, Pa.) drew consecutive leadoff walks, and junior third baseman Dominic Sarro (North Riverside, Ill.) walked with one out to load the bases.  Rotondo bounced into a fielder's choice to score the first run and Sarro was safe at second when an error was committed on Rotondo's ball.  Lorusso walked with the bases loaded two batters later to force in the second run.

Chicago State got on the board in the third inning on run-scoring singles by Nick Heidenthal and Matt Sullivan.  A bases-loaded walk to Gabriel Coburn in the top of the fourth pulled the Cougars to within 4-3 before the Wildcats countered with two runs in their half of the fifth inning.

Yunis Halim (2-0, 3.00 ERA) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Chicago State.

Villanova was playing its first of two games on Sunday.  Less than an hour after the game against the Cougars ended, the Wildcats were back on the field against Mount St. Mary's in a slugfest that eventually resulted in a 19-16 victory for The Mount.
