Box Score Smithfield, RI – The Wildcats closed out the Hampton Inn-vitational and completed the sweep with a 3-0 win of Bryant on Saturday afternoon. The straight-sets victory made it a clean sweep of the whole tournament as Villanova did not drop a single set during the weekend.
Saturday got off to a strange start for the Wildcats, arriving at the gym only to be met with an hour and a half delay from the initially scheduled start time.
Once the match began it was business as usual for Villanova. The first set was tightly contested early on while both teams worked to loosen up and shake off that delay. The Wildcats found their stride starting at 8-8, before putting together an 8-3 run to build themselves a lead. Much of the run was courtesy of
Mallory Potts, who amassed six kills in the first set.
The momentum from the first set carried over in a big way to the second set. The Wildcats began the set with a 7-0 run and bury Bryant from the get-go thanks to a first-point ace and back-t0-back kills. After Bryant got on the board, Villanova pushed the lead to 14-2 and went on to win 25-12.
Bryant recovered in the third set and put up a fight, but Villanova held on and took the third 25-22. The Wildcats were once again led in kills by
Mallory Potts with 11, followed by
Allie Olsonoski with eight and
Sophia Howling with seven.
Emma Decker and
Regan Lough were steady as usual, tallying 30 assists and 13 digs, respectively.
"I thought today we played confidently which I liked even though I don't think we executed as well as we might have liked," said head coach
Josh Steinbach.
Following the tournament,
Allie Olsonoski was named the tournament MVP. Despite only playing in two matches, she certainly made her presence felt by racking up 17 kills while hitting .469 and added four blocks.
Mallory Potts and
Emma Decker were also named to the all-tournament team. Potts recorded 23 kills in the two matches she played in, and
Emma Decker dished out 67 assists in her two matches.
"Allies been great," Coach Steinbach said. "She's leading and playing at the level we'd hoped for. Shess a great all-around volleyball player and keeps getting better. Mal took good swings all weekend and Emma has been doing a really good job of balancing our offense."
The Wildcats next action will be on the West Coast, when they travel to Los Angeles to play in the Trojan Invitational at USC. They'll face Yale, Howard and USC during their time in the City of Angels. The first match will be against Yale on Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
