QUEENS, New York – For the first time in 20 seasons, the Wildcats (3-1, 1-0) defeated St. John's (4-3, 0-1), winning the match 4-3 on the road and earning their first BIG EAST win of the season.
The last win over the Red Storm came on the road in Flushing, New York, on Oct. 6, 2000, when the Wildcats defeated St. John's 7-2.
Despite losing the doubles point to start today's meeting, Villanova fought back, winning four of its singles matches.
Junior Claudia Althans won 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 singles, dominating in that position for the second straight match.
No. 3 junior Lexi DeNucci (7-5, 6-3), No. 5 senior Carina Burdick (6-2, 6-3) and No. 6 freshman Caitlin Fisher (6-2, 6-0) all won their respective singles matches.
Burdick, one of the team's co-captains, clinched the match for the Wildcats.
