RIVERSIDE, Ca. – The Wildcats (5-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) traveled over 2,600 miles to California to get their fourth straight win, defeating UC Riverside 4-3 on Monday afternoon. This is Villanova's second straight win over the Highlanders.
Half of the match took place on Sunday afternoon, but due to rain it had to be finished 24 hours later.
Villanova secured the doubles point to open the match, with the duo of junior
Lexi DeNucci and senior
Kaylan Rotman (6-4) and the pairing of senior
Carina Burdick and sophomore
Olivia Kapp (6-1) both winning their respective sets.
In singles, DeNucci won her No. 3 match in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), as did Burdick in the No. 5 spot (6-1, 6-2).
Freshman
Caitlin Fisher, who played No. 6 singles, clinched the win for Villanova in three tough fought sets (7-6, 1-6, 6-4). She is still undefeated in singles play this season.
This is the best start to the season for Villanova in over 22 seasons.
The team is looking to continue its momentum when it takes on Point Loma on Wednesday.
