Winter Haven, Fla. – Villanova secured the weekend sweep of Bucknell in dramatic fashion with a 6-4 win in 10 innings. After surrendering a three-run lead and trailing by one, the Wildcats got one in the ninth and two in the 10
th to complete their first sweep since the opening weekend of 2018.
Brandon Siegenthaler turned in his second consecutive quality start and the sixth in a row by the Villanova pitching staff. The freshman went 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K on 94 pitches to keep the Bison offense at bay, and put himself in line for the win at the time he was removed.
Lucas Latrenta's bat stayed hot, going 3-5 with a home run and two RBI Sunday. The solo home run broke the scoring open in the second inning and gave Villanova a 1-0 lead.
Villanova struck for two more in the second frame. After two walks and an error loaded the bases with nobody out,
Nick Lorusso lifted a fly ball to plate one and Latrenta delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.
With Siegenthaler's pitch count nearing the century mark, Bucknell took advantage of the Villanova bullpen, tagging four runs to Cam Mathes in the seventh.
Tyler Arella was able to limit the damage and strand a runner on second to leave Bucknell up only 4-3.
Trailing heading to the ninth, Villanova was fortunate to have the heart of the order due up. O'Neill worked a walk and made it to third courtesy of two wild pitches. With the tying run 90 feet away,
Ryan Toohers grounded out into the hole between first and second to bring O'Neill home and tie the game at 4-4.
Bucknell threatened to walk it off in the bottom of the frame against
Cole Vanderslice. With a runner on third and one out, Vanderslice induced a pair of ground balls that held the runner at third and force extra innings.
Given new life, Villanova took advantage in the 10
th. Margulis worked a one-out walk and
Tyler Bruno laid down a perfect bunt to put two on with just one out and red-hot
Chris Rotondo coming to the plate. Sitting on a 3-1 count, the junior got the pitch he wanted and laced a triple to the left-center gap to plate at pair and put the Wildcats in the lead.
Up against a potential drop-dead time with a flight to catch, Villanova needed a quick inning to secure the sweep.
Jack Povey came out of the pen and retired the side on 11 pitches to earn the first save of his career.
Cole Vanderslice's work on the mound in the ninth inning put him in line for the first win of his career.
Villanova was solid all the way around in the series, with the pitching posting a team ERA of 1.62 and six different Wildcats hitting above .300 on the weekend.
After 13 straight road games to start the season, the Wildcats will open up the home schedule with a matchup against NJIT on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth Meeting. The homestand will then continue with a three-game set against Coppin State over the weekend.
