Storrs, CT- A head-fought entertaining soccer match came to an end in the 106
th minute when Jada Konte scored to give the Huskies to a 1-0 victory over Villanova on Sunday afternoon.
Ela Kopec got her second straight start on Sunday and the rookie finished with 13 saves, seven of those came in the second half.Â
Villanova's offense started strong taking four shots,
Molly Keiper got a strong shot off during the run that was saved. The Wildcats also closed out the half with two of their strongest scoring changes of the first.Â
Jane Olcott placed her shot to the top of the goal and
Lauren Ashman sent one on target as well but both were saved by the Huskies keeper Kaitlyn Mahoney.
Francesca Yanchuk started the second half with a strong shot on goal and her classmate
Maddie Fried followed with one of her own to the top right corner. Kopec kept the Huskies scoreless in the second half making great saves to help force overtime.
In the first overtime
Niki Molina had a strong chance in the closing minutes that was saved and Kopec once again kept UConn scoreless with two saves.
In the 106
th minute a Villanova pass at midfield was blocked and from there the Huskies used that advantage to break away down field. Jaydah Bedoya took a shot that was saved by Kopec but deflected back into play. There Konte was able to make the final contact to score the game winner for the Huskies.
Villanova will return home to take on Butler next Sunday, October 24
th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. and with it being the final home game of the regular season the team's seniors will be honored in a ceremony during pre-game.Â
