ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Over the final two days of competition at the ITA Atlantic Regional this weekend Villanova tallied eight wins in singles matches that were added to the initial draw as the tournament progressed. All nine of the Wildcats who competed over the weekend saw action in the extra matches played over the final two days and Villanova combined to go 8-8 in those competitions to officially wrap up its fall season.
In matches played on Friday the trio of sophomore
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.), sophomore
Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) and freshman
Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) each tallied victories in their only matches of the day. Nguyen faced Christian Pumpelly from Navy and was a 6-0, 6-2 winner in straight sets. Khromchenko also won in straight sets over Michael Pallotos from George Mason with scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Fourticq outlasted Pascal Wagemaker from Delaware in a third-set tiebreaker to post a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 12-10 victory. He also notched a win on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Edik Pribitkin from Loyola (Md.).
The final day of competition for the Wildcats was a good one, with the team winning five of nine matches on Saturday. Junior
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) tallied two wins on Saturday, first advancing past Elliot Stevens of Mount St. Mary's (6-3, 5-7, 10-6) and later tallying a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Cy McLeod from the host Midshipmen. Senior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) were also winners on the final day of the tournament. Jones beat Will Pak from Navy in a 6-2, 6-2 decision and Robinson finished the weekend strong with a 6-1, 3-6, 13-11 marathon win over Conners O'Brien from the Midshipmen. Earlier in the week Robinson advanced to the round of 32 in the main singles draw.
Villanova's fall schedule consisted of familiar annual events such as its home tournament and the nearby Saint Joseph's Invitational to go along with a new addition to the schedule in the River City Tennis Open in Richmond. The fall concluded with the ITA Atlantic Regional this past weekend.
The Fall season overall was a highly successful one for the Wildcats, who posted a 75-63 (.543) record in singles matches in their four tournaments. Seven different players won at least seven matches with a record of .500 or better during the Fall. Jones and Nguyen led the way by each going 11-4, while Fourticq opened the year by going 9-4 in his first taste of collegiate competition. Khromchenko (7-5), Robinson (7-6) and Suarez (7-6) also had winning singles records.
Among the highlights from the fall season were Jones and Robinson winning the doubles title at the Saint Joseph's Invitational and Robinson advancing to the round of 32 in the main draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional. In addition to tying for the team lead in victories during the fall season, Jones was also the consolation bracket winner at the Saint Joseph's tournament. Fourticq and Khromchenko teamed up to win the Flight 2 consolation doubles bracket at Saint Joseph's. Nguyen advanced to the final in his flight.
The team continued its success with four singles flight champions at the River City Tennis Open. Jones, Khromchenko and Winton all went 3-0 in their brackets in Richmond, while Nguyen was 2-1 and won his flight with a victory over the other player who went 2-1 in that bracket. Villanova was 18-9 overall in singles play during the tournament.
With the Fall schedule completed, the Wildcats will begin preparations for the Spring campaign which opens with a dual match against Delaware on February 11 in Wilmington, Del.
