Hamden, Conn. - The Villanova field hockey team fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats in a BIG EAST matchup Friday afternoon, by a score of 5-4. Villanova's record now sits at 6-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Quinnipiac improves to 2-11 on the season and 1-5 in the BIG EAST, after earning their first conference victory.
After a quiet start of the game, Quinnipiac jumped on the board late in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Just minutes later,
Rachael Overlander got a scoring opportunity that was saved by the goalkeeper. Her shot rebounded off the goalie to teammate
Amanda Middleman, who tied the game heading into the second period. This was just the start of a career day for the sophomore forward.Â
The second period featured only three shots, all by the Bobcats, with the only shot on goal saved by Villanova goalkeeper
Jordan McGinley. The score heading into halftime was 1-1.
One minute into the third period, Quinnipiac scored to take a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats looked to respond quickly after earning a penalty corner a minute later.

Raina Smolij at the top of the shooting circle.
Sabine de Ruijter fired a shot into the top of the goal to tie the game yet again 2-2. Quinnipiac wasted no time breaking the tie, scoring in just over a minute to make the score 3-2. All three goals were scored in a 2:38 time span.Â
Keeping their momentum going, Quinnipiac scored 1:33 into the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to 4-2. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest, Middleman redirected a shot from de Ruijter for her second goal of the contest, cutting Villanova's deficit to one. Two minutes later, she worked her way into the shooting circle and had her shot roll past the goalkeeper, recording a hat trick and evening the score 4-4, with 7:23 left in the contest.Â
In overtime, the Bobcats were awarded a penalty corner after two minutes of play and converted to win the game.Â
Villanova will return to action Saturday afternoon, traveling to Holy Cross for a 2 PM start.Â
