Villanova will open-up the BIG EAST portion of its schedule on Friday, Dec. 3, with a road game at Providence. The Wildcats enter play with a 3-3 overall record, while the Friars are 3-4 on the season. Tip-off at Alumni Hall is set for 7 p.m.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series against Providence by a 52-27 count. Villanova has had the upper hand in the series of late. Entering play on Friday, Villanova has won 30 of the last 36 meetings against the Friars.
Of all the opponents Villanova has faced over the years, the Wildcats have played Providence more than any other team. Friday's game between the schools will be the 80th all-time meeting. Villanova leads the series by a 52-27 margin. St. John's ranks second as the team Villanova has played the most at 72 times.
It will be a homecoming affair for Villanova Associate Head Coach
Joe Mullaney, Jr., when the Wildcats travel to Providence. Mullaney is a 1978 graduate of Providence where he was a member of the men's basketball team and participated in two NCAA Tournaments and the NIT semifinals once. Wednesday's game will be played at Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall. Mullaney Gymnasium is named after Mullaney's father,
Joe Mullaney Sr., who was a legendary men's basketball coach at Providence. Mullaney Sr., coached the Friar men from 1955-69 and 1981-85 and totaled a career record of 319-164 (.660).
Joe Mullaney Jr., was also the coach of the Providence women's team from 1980-83 where he led the Friars to a 66-27 mark.
Friday night's game at Providence will be the first of three straight road games for the Wildcats. Following the trip to Providence, Villanova will play at Creighton on Sunday, Dec. 5 and at James Madison on Dec. 9. After returning home to play Oregon State on Dec. 12, the Wildcats finish the stretch at La Salle on Dec. 21. Villanova is 2-1 in road contests this season.
Junior guard
Brooke Mullin turned in the best game of her Wildcat career in Wednesday's 65-60 win over Lehigh. In 32 minutes of action, Mullin scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including a 3-of-7 effort from three-point range and a 1-of-2 performance from the foul line. She also tallied five rebounds and a career-high five steals. She is currently averaging 7.2 points per game and is shooting 41.7 percent from three (10-of-24).
Freshman guard
Lucy Olsen recorded her second 20-point game of her young career on Wednesday versus Lehigh with 22 points. She was 7-of-14 from the floor, 2-of-3 from long distance and 6-of-7 from the foul line. Olsen is one of four Wildcats averaging double figures at 10.2 points per game. She is shooting .431 from the field (22-of-51) and .500 from three-point range (9-of-18).
