Villanova Offense Held In Check In Series Finale

RADFORD, Va. – Villanova (0-2) right-handers Jimmy Kingsbury (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Cameron Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) combined to throw six innings while only giving up two runs despite the afternoon loss to Radford (4-2) at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Kingsbury got the ball for the Wildcats in the series finale and finished with a final line of 4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, and 7 K. After giving up an early run on two hits in the opening frame, the senior dialed in and limited the Highlanders to just one hit. A patient Radford offense drew three walks, but Kingsbury remained poised and worked out of the tight situations to keep the Wildcats close.

In the top of the third inning, the Wildcats took advantage of a Radford miscue and plated their only run. Vance Anderson (Mooresville, N.C.) opened up the inning with a leadoff single. Following back-to-back groundouts, Anderson reached third and eventually scored on a Radford wild pitch.

The Highlanders struck back in the fifth and sixth inning scoring four runs before the Wildcats turned to Cameron Mathes. The senior was electric out of the bullpen and finished with a clean 2 IP, 1 H, and 4 K.

Villanova remained patient at the plate drawing six walks but were limited offensively tallying four hits. Pat O'Neill (Eagleville, Pa.) and Jack O'Reilly (Villanova, Pa.) have led the Wildcats offensively as the veterans have produced a hit in each of their first two games.

The Wildcats will return to action for their home opener on Saturday, Mar. 6 against Hofstra. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 ET.
