BROCKPORT, N.Y.—Freshman forward
Meghan Mitchell (Villanova, Pa.) was announced on Wednesday morning as the Play Safe Turf & Track/NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week. The national honor comes after Mitchell was chosen as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday.
Mitchell had a breakout performance for Villanova in two games against Quinnipiac last weekend. She scored four goals and had one assist in the two games to total nine points for the weekend. In a 5-0 win on Sunday, Mitchell recorded the first hat trick and the first game-winning goal of her collegiate career. She scored the first goal of the contest in the 22
nd minute, added a second tally just over two minutes later and assisted on a third goal two minutes after that as the Wildcats raced out to a four-goal lead in the first half.
In the second half of Sunday's game, Mitchell tallied her third goal with 6:34 to play in the game and in doing so became the first Villanova freshman to have a hat trick since Ally Smith against West Chester on September 26, 2007. Mitchell chipped in to a 3-2 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday with a game-tying goal in the third quarter. That score came on a breakaway scoring chance when Mitchell collected a pass and beat the keeper 1-v-1 for the goal.
Mitchell leads the Villanova offense through the first eight games of the season with five goals and 11 points. She has scored on five of her 14 shots on the year.
